Jawahir was founded by a group of like minded women who back in 2003 started to attend one on the first belly dance classes in the South East Wales area.

By May 2004 we had accepted an invitation to perform at the Tredegar House Folk Festival. The rest is history.

Many of us in the group had never performed in public - not even as children and as you can imagine we were very nervous.  The weather was glorious and the audience loved us - we never looked back, we had caught the performance bug!!

Since then we have performed at several prestigious events in the south and west of the UK, including the 2004 National Eisteddfod celebrations, One World Week, International Women's Day and a host of other local festivals, community and dance events.

The group was even filmed for a BBC Wales documentary in 2004.

In 2006 we produced our own theatre show - Raqset Al-Shems (Dances of the Sun)

We appear annually at Tredegar House International Folk Dance Festival, Caerleon Arts Festival and Rogerstone Festival.  We have been proud to support and perform at the Welsh Warrior Festival in aid of the Richard Hunt Foundation in 2010 and 2011.

Spring and summer are our busiest seasons and 2011 has proved no different, we have  performed at Tredegar House Folk Festival, Welsh Warrior Festival, Rogerstone Village Fete and many others throughout the year.

See coming events for our diary so far.

Jawahir perform all styles of middle eastern dance fusing North African, Egyptian, Turkish and even European rhythms using traditional and modern movement.

Our costumes are bright, colourful and vary from full tribal (tattoo''s included) to light and airy belly style depending on the dance and music we are using.

Our influences include many cultures from Berber to egyptian.

Each of our members have attended many workshops and workshop weekends with world famous tutors such as Amel Tafsout, Helene, Paulette (Gypsy Caravan), Zehara, Isadora, Orit and Michelle Pender to name but a few.
